About Dr Jane Major

As a Clinical Psychologist I am experienced in working compassionately with a variety of emotional and relationship issues. I am particularly informed by attachment theory and I use a trauma informed approach. This means that I think that our experiences and relationships fundamentally affect how we relate to our feelings, life experiences and others.

I’ve learned that difficulties aren’t created within individuals but develop in the relationship between people and are affected by our context. This can include the impact of gender, power and status, relationships, ethnicity, belief systems and sexuality.

Some of the reasons people come to see me, include, but are not limited to, the following issues:

  • abuse
  • ADHD
  • adjustment difficulties
  • anger
  • anxiety
  • autism spectrum conditions
  • communication difficulties
  • bereavement and loss
  • body image issues
  • bullying
  • depression
  • family issues
  • feeling stuck in patterns of relating
  • guilt and shame
  • identity issues
  • life and work stress
  • loneliness and isolation
  • low self worth
  • personal development
  • relationship issues
  • sexuality and sexual identity
  • stress
  • trauma
  • vulnerability

Therapies and Treatments offered

I’ve found that one therapeutic approach doesn’t work for all and so I tailor my approach to meet your unique needs, contexts and preferences. I draw upon:

  • Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)
  • Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT)
  • Psychodynamic psychotherapy
  • Systemic family therapy
  • Emotionally focussed therapy (EFT)
  • Compassion-based therapy.

You may wish to see me alone or with your partner(s)/significant others. The relationship we build together is very important. I will seek to help us build a space within which you feel safe enough, to develop a non-judgemental awareness of your thoughts, feelings, relationships and behaviours.

Our work together may include increasing your self-compassion and enhancing your self-care skills including how you treat and talk to yourself, and how you interact with the significant people in your life.
