About Phoebe Alonso
I am a Registered Practitioner Counselling Psychologist with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), a member of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and have worked for the NHS in Counselling & Psychology since 2000. The majority of this work has been within an Adult Learning Disability Service, with additional time spent working in Adult Mental Health, Health Psychology and Staff Support services in Derbyshire. I am experienced in providing clinical supervision, coaching, groups and training for staff.
I use a range of approaches in my work as appropriate and according to the client’s needs and preferences, including Person-Centred counselling, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), energy therapies and NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming).
I have worked as a teacher in schools and colleges. I have been a qualified psychologist since 2006 and am currently completing a Professional Doctorate, which has involved research around the facilitation of empowerment through therapy. I am planning to submit a journal article about my research.
I am also a qualified Coach, providing 1-to-1 or Team Coaching and I have particular interests in helping people develop their self-confidence and utilising the mind-body connection. I have experience of setting up groups to help people with their presentation skills and fear of public speaking. I have experience with radio and TV. My training in NLP and hypnosis with Paul McKenna and Richard Bandler has also been helpful alongside the rest of my training.
Reasons for having therapy and coaching:
I offer coaching and therapy sessions, specialising in the areas of Confidence & Empowerment. I also cover the areas included below. My doctoral research has investigated how empowerment can be facilitated by the therapeutic relationship in people with learning disabilities, although I encourage empowerment in all clients that I work with. I have previously set up personal development groups, including Chesterfield Speakers - a Toastmasters club to develop public speaking and a ‘YES!’ personal development & networking group in Sheffield.
Work covered by Counselling Psychologists:
‘Counselling Psychologists work therapeutically with clients with a variety of problems (for example, the effects of childhood sexual abuse, relationship breakdown, domestic violence, major trauma) and/or symptoms of psychological disorder (such as anxiety , depression, eating disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, and psychosis). They offer an active collaborative relationship which can both facilitate the exploration of underlying issues and can empower people to confront change’. (From the Official British Psychological Society website).
