Iyengar Yoga
Yoga is one of the oldest systems of well-being in the world, providing a holistic approach to mind, body and spirit. There are many difference styles of yoga, all of which are rooted in the eight limbs of yoga as expounded by ancient Indian sages, and set down by sage Patanjali. Yoga practice both relaxes and energises the body and mind, bringing vitality, flexibility, strength, concentration, self-confidence and mental calm.
Iyengar Yoga is the style developed and taught in Pune, India, by BKS Iyengar and his family. The emphasis is on correct alignment and stretching of the body, through carefully sequenced poses or ‘asanas’. In time, the practice of pranayama, or breathing, is also introduced. In Iyengar yoga classes, use may be made of props, such as foam blocks. These are designed to ensure that everyone can work correctly and safely in the postures, so as to achieve their full potential and maximise the benefits to them. This makes yoga accessible to all, regardless of injuries or specific health conditions.
Iyengar yoga teachers undergo extremely rigorous training and continuing professional development. This results in the award of the Iyengar Certification Mark and full insurance. Teachers are required to know how to assist students with a wide range of problems and health conditions, and a strong emphasis is placed on ensuring student safety.
