Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy helps restore movement and function to as near normal as possible when someone is affected by injury, illness or by developmental or other disability.

As a healthcare profession, physiotherapy's science foundation covers a broad and varied range of work which involves working with people to promote their own health and well being.

Physiotherapists combine their knowledge, skills and approach to improve a broad range of physical problems associated with different 'systems' of the body. In particular they treat:

What to expect in your first appointment

The physiotherapist will assess how your body is working and how your condition is affecting your life. They will ask lots of questions, watch your movements and touch the affected area. Recommendations for treatment depend on the length of time that has passed since the injury or how long it is since the onset of a disease. Any visit is likely to include:

  • exercises to do yourself
  • some manual therapy
  • advice on posture while sitting and sleeping
  • advice on maximising safe movement
  • lifestyle advice and activities to avoid

It may also include:

  • applying heat or cold to the affected area
  • application of a TENS machine to help with any pain.
