Reflexology has been used in Ancient Egypt, India and China and was introduced to the West in 1913 Dr. William Fitzgerald.
It is a type of massage which is used to relieve tension in the body and which can also be used to treat illness. The theory is that there a reflex points on our hands, lower legs and feet, face and head (including the ears) which are linked to every area and organ of our bodies. ‘Reflex’ in this context really means ‘reflection’ of all the structures, systems and organs of the body onto the sole of the foot. Massage of these points enables the therapist to access the same longitudinal energy meridians that run through the body as acupuncturists and for this reason, may be an alternative for someone who does not want to be needled.
Reflexology is non-intrusive and it can be given to any age from small babies to the most elderly. A reflexologist works on the feet to treat the whole person not just the prevailing symptoms. Your treatment will be tailored just for you and it will take into account physical and non-physical things that could be affecting your health and well-being.
What will happen at my first appointment?
Your therapist will take a full medical history from you and then based on this information, will use their hands to apply pressure to the appropriate reflex points with small massaging movements. They will be able to read your condition by doing this and tailor your treatment accordingly. Overall this experience will be relaxing and the therapist will discuss the need for and frequency of, any future treatments with you based on your individual requirements. Many people report feeling very relaxed after a treatment with a surge of energy later.
